One year of automatic captions and more news

This November we celebrated the first anniversary of the launch of "automatic captions or subtitles automatic. At first, we worked only with certain channel partner, but soon put the automatic captions available to everyone. As you know, we like to launch products and services quickly and keep improving based on actual user experience, so this year we have been progressing continuously to increase the quantity and improve the quality of online videos captioned. This is a summary of the achievements so far:
subtitles The number of manually created has grown more than three times, mainly due to the automatic captioning technology.
Recently, we have reduced by 20% error rate in our recognition algorithms voice.

When we launched in November 2009, mentioned how the online video presents a challenge to large scale. Before there was the automatic captions, there were about 200 thousand YouTube videos with subtitles. It may seem a huge amount, but the fact is that YouTube is up more than 35 hours of video per minute. Our goal is that everyone can access the videos, but they can not hear what is said or understand the language.
  • Since March this year, users have had access to almost any video subtitles in English is spoken clearly. Less than a year later, there is clearly strong demand for subtitled content and that users have made good use of the technology we put at your disposal (more than 23 million views is not a minor detail.) Users also are using this technology to access content in their own language, as the subtitles can be translated automatically to more than 50 languages: in fact, have already been more than 7.6 million translations.
  • Of course, automatic captions are not perfect, therefore we have carried out a series of initiatives to help people create subtitles manually. At an event last year called
  • present the automatic caption
  • timing, a feature that can convert a common text captions with time code.
Now we have added this option to
YouTube Data API
to facilitate the development of scripts and applications that can load a large number of subtitles at once. Also, recently started the program
YouTube rating
Ready to help owners of videos to find suppliers subtitles professionals who are familiar with the technology of YouTube. Through these efforts we have seen has more than tripled the number of subtitles on YouTube created manually (now available over 500 thousand).

But when it comes subtitle, does not interest us only the quantity but also quality. And we have good news about this, because as you would a 1 year, YouTube has also been learning new words. For example, we are now able to recognize the English word "smartphone (get tested by activating the voice recognition). In recent weeks we have deployed significant improvements in our technology to optimize speech recognition accuracy of automatic captions. The new model of YouTube speech recognition reduces the error rate by about 20%. While these improvements vary from live video in accordance with sound quality and clarity of words, this means that if a video in the past correctly identified 50% of the words, now recognizes 60% and 75% identified as before, now can recognize about 80 %. As always, we will continue to make improvements so we have more news soon.
From a personal standpoint, it is encouraging to see all comments, thank you notes, videos, blog posts and to bug reports we have received in the last year. While it is impossible to answer every one of them, are very useful because they allow us to direct and focus the efforts on this project. We have considered the feedback from users perform a number of subtle improvements in service, such as the option "Always show
automatic captions (or subtitles always display machines) with the addition of a transcription interactive button so the user can see all subtitles and skip through the video, with the red button
(closed captions) easier to locate.

What's next? We will continue working to improve accuracy and to make the subtitles are available everywhere: on TV over the Internet, computer and cell phone. Other novelties will announce, so stay tuned. Ken

How Do I Take Veriface Off

Chrome Extensions to YouTube

I'm a fan of cinema and I love searching for YouTube

trailers films to keep up with what the next releases. And while I find it easy and convenient to see the progress online, I always wanted my browser gave me an experience more akin to the one I have when I go to the movies. Therefore, I was finding out and discovered that there are
Chrome extensions that can greatly enhance how you see the videos on YouTube. Expander for YouTube videos from YouTube and allow you to see the entire browser. With Turn Off the Lights, you can make the whole page surrounding the video are black, as if the cinema. And if you're not sure what would be best to watch video, you can use an OpinionCloud , which carries a summary of the comments on YouTube (and Flickr!) So you can quickly have a vision of what is the general opinion.

Just recently, Google launched team YouTube Feed , which notifies users when there are new videos available on their pages Start the YouTube feeds. Thus, you can access videos and rate them directly from your browser.
There are many other useful extensions to the gallery
that can further personalize the YouTube experience. You can access more information about Google Chrome extensions
here, or in this video:

Remember when

announced in March that climbed every minute 24 hours of video to YouTube? Today we can announce that we have broken that record, now a minute up to 35 hours of video. That equates to 2,100 hours of video every 60 minutes or 50,400 hours that are uploaded to YouTube each day. If we measure it by comparing with films (assuming that a Hollywood film takes on average 120 minutes), 35 hours of video would be the equivalent of more than 176,000 movies released per week. Another way to realize the magnitude of which we are talking about would say that if the three largest TV networks in the U.S. were broadcasting 24 hours a day, every day of the week and the 356 days a year for the next 60 years would still not transmitting the amount of content that is uploaded on YouTube every 30 days.
The graph shows that in the past two years has more than doubled the content uploaded to YouTube. How was this possible? The following are some of the factors contributing to this growth:

The time limit for users to upload videos that happened to be 15 minutes instead of 10, which is an increase of 50 percent.
The size of the files can be uploaded as standard increased by more than 10 in recent years, now becoming 2GB.

is now much faster and easier to upload videos to YouTube via mobile phones.
  • Today there are more companies making up our APIs to allow outside upload videos from YouTube.com (video game Call of Duty Black Ops. Activision is a good example of how to record and share videos from within same game).
  • What things can happen within 35 hours? Here are some examples:
  • A mayfly fly
  • may be born, live their adult life and death.

    A person can lead
  • your car and travel, if not stopped at any time from YouTube's headquarters in San Bruno, California, to Chicago, Illinois.

  • could give more than halfway around the world in a balloon
  • . Displaying
  • and considering that our users could exceed the target of raising a full day of videos per minute, now we'd like to challenge the entire YouTube community to rise two days, 48 \u200b\u200bhours. If it comes to that, would be a growth of 100% on record that we imposed in March 2010, and a new reason to celebrate.
